Getting noticed on the internet is tough, whether you're a blogger trying to make a name for yourself or a lead-lined sheetrock company trying to attract new customers online. There are a number of ways to improve the traffic on your website - and therefore boost your customer numbers - but one of the oldest is link building. If you're looking for ways to increase your website's visibility, link building is not something you can afford to overlook. We've outlined the basics of link building for you here to help you get started.
If you're not familiar with what constitutes a link, it is, like the name suggests, a connection or bridge between two pages on the internet which allows visitors on one website to travel directly to another simply by clicking on the link. Links can be in the form of a text phrase, such as "Edmonton lipodissolve," in the form of an image, or even a video. They are usually distinguishable from the surrounding content by their color and the fact that the pointer transforms into a hand when the visitor mouses over it.
Before there were search engines, the only way for people to navigate from one independent page to another was to follow links. A fair amount of web surfing still goes on through links, but today most people find what they need though search engines, so most website owners devote all of their energy to getting as highly rated on lists of search engine results as the page for the Sutton members program. However, link building is still important because many search engines judge a site's relevancy by the number of times it is linked to by other sites.
The trick, then, is to have as many other websites link to yours as possible. This is difficult because you usually have no control over another person's website. However, everyone needs links, which is why many website owners participate in link exchanges, where two websites on similar topics (for instance an English school in Canada and a company that makes language learning software) would agree to link to each other in order to share their readership.
The thing to watch out for, though, is that having a lot of links from websites that are irrelevant to yours or that are basically spam will hurt your search engine ranking and your credibility with ordinary web surfers. So try not to push unwanted links to your video game site onto Dentistry Mississauga or fill other people's message boards with links to your own site. Stick to above board methods of link building - they're slower but better in the long run for the health of your site.
